One of the most common sins of many people, in the church and outside of it, is gossip, and when the subject refers to clothing, many are those who come out to give their opinion, most of the time in a very subjective way. .
Certainly God has given us some guidelines in his Word about how we should dress. On 1 Corinthians 6:19 read “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you and whom you have received from God? You are not your own owners; they were bought with a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.” What tells us that our life belongs to God and therefore we must strive that our way of looking, our appearance and that open letter that everyone sees faithfully represents the lifestyle we preach, so that our works are consistent and we have nothing to be ashamed of.
However, it is also known that many people using the knowledge that God gives them about this many times go out to condemn those who in their Christian life are not fulfilling this requirement. If a new believer brother in his old life used to dress in a dark way or with some particular garment, they come out to condemn him as if the judgment were part of us and as if Christ had given us this task to fulfill it exactly.
Prayer is the most effective means
We must learn to take into account that as humans, we can often make mistakes in the judgments we make about other people based on their appearance. This is a mistake that I particularly made in my early days as a Christian, and I say this because it was God himself who then covered my mouth when I could see how people who “apparently” used to live a wrong life because of their way of living, of moment by moment they were transformed and left all their old ways. This is undoubtedly a very important lesson because it allows us to understand that the heart of people, in their habits and thoughts, is God who transforms, who changes and creates a new nature.
As older brothers, as brothers of the faith, our duty is to act according to what the Word says. If we see something that is not right, we can go to that someone and help him in private, with meekness and bonds of love. Many people in these cases do not opt for this route and before trying to help wisely, they prefer to create discrepancy in others by commenting behind their backs on their point of view as if this action could help in some way to restore the person. If we have already tried to correct someone wisely in private and for some reason the person does not understand us, our best weapon will be prayer. We cannot make others think like us, nor transmit our experience or what God has dealt with our lives to others, because each person has a particular growth. The gospel is not an imposition, it is good news and people should feel free and independent in their decisions about it. In this way the change is genuine and real.
What we shouldn’t do is create news about the subject exposing our reasons, no matter how biblical they are, backbiting is an evil sin that reveals how dark it is in people’s hearts. Whenever you see someone failing, it is best to correct him with love, like a brother, a son or a father, with the same patience that God applies to us, this shows that there really is a good intention.
If Jesus Christ did not condemn, why should you?
There is no verse in the scriptures that empowers us to judge a person’s dress. We can guide, we can establish norms to guarantee order and decency in the Church, but we cannot occupy the place of judge that belongs only to God. You do not know exactly what the background of the person is, nor do you know the treatment that God is having with him, your duty as a child of God is to pray for him or her and if for some reason, the heart of this person is not in God, you can be sure that it will be God Himself who will bring this to light, because God answers prayer. But you cannot prejudice or criticize the thought of another, because perhaps without realizing it you may be being a stumbling block so that a child of God grows and develops.
Today there are many cases in which people, especially young people who left the Church because they did not find in it a wise advice that would help them understand why they should take care of their clothing and worse still, there are many cases in which these People closed their doors to him and with a broken heart, they believed that God was as unjust as his children were. With our actions we inadvertently represent God on earth and we must be very careful not to represent him in the wrong way. God is the one who fights for us. Why worry or why want to control others? Pray and ask God continually for situations of this type and God himself will come and help you in your desire, after all, He is the first interested.
